Community Life

"In Santa Barbara I dipped my feet in the water, in the ocean water. I've never been in the ocean water in my life. I just did it to see how it felt. It felt good. That night I slept well."
– Search for Adventure Participant
Empowering the individuals we serve to participate fully in their community is a core value at Search and the cornerstone of an active, fun and socially connected life.

Search's programs are sharply focused on supporting individuals to connect with their communities. In recent years, Search has infused technology, including iPads, desktops, and laptops into its programs to support individuals to access local businesses, civic engagement, and recreational opportunities.

Highlights of community life at Search include Search for Adventure, our unique travel program that offers vacation experiences to destinations near and far. The big idea here is that people with disabilities should have the same opportunities to travel and go on vacation as the rest of us. Search for Adventure steps up by giving people with disabilities experiences and adventures of a lifetime. Getaways have included hiking the historic Appalachian Trail, experiencing the majesty of the Grand Canyon and riding the range at the Powderhorn Dude Ranch in Colorado.

In Adult Learning, new partnerships with 12+ organizations have led to regular volunteer experiences including gardening and farming, working at a local food pantry and peer visits at a rehabilitation facility, among many others.
